about

Partially blind from birth, Jumari sees the world in murky shapes (if he sees at all) and can only make out strong colours under optimal lighting.

He was sent to a sighted school when he was young because his home was too far away from the Singapore School for the Blind (known today as the Singapore School for the Visually Handicapped).

His poor vision proved an obstacle to his studies and he only had primary education.

Although he was fortunate to find a factory job he was good at -- his nimble fingers made him much more skilled at fitting the rubber parts on refrigerator compressors than his sighted colleagues -- he was retrenched after eight years when the company closed.

A stint as a packer at another factory proved more difficult and less pleasant, and he was eventually retrenched again.

Picking himself up, he signed up for massage courses and now works for the SAVH's V.R.O.O.M. team (Visually-Handicapped Run Our Own Mobile Massage) as a masseur.

He wouldn't describe his job as 'enjoyable', but calls it 'hard work' -- something he puts much effort into to ensure that his clients receive the best service he can offer.

When he isn't working, Jumari enjoys playing guitar with his mates and fishing at East Coast Park.

"Jumari the Masseuer Plays Guitar in an Imaginary Field" begins with Jumari's guitar improvisations before undergoing a psychological metamorphosis, creating a surprising piece of modern-day Romanticism.

This track was a contribution to the "Cityscapes: Design by Sound" compilation.
